Susan and Maud had been exchanged their positions from the beginning of life. But a big conspiracy brought them together again. They fell in love with each other also suffered from the big conspiracy.
Susan has been trained as a finger-smith even though she could have been a fair lady. Maud lived a rich life but had to be a secretary of Mr. Lilly who collected and cataloged pornographic books. Mr. Rivers who pretended to be a gentleman created the second connection for Sue and Maud. There is no doubt that the girls became close friends soon according to both of their wishful thinking. But Sue hesitated to carry out the conspiracy due to her kindness as well as love for Maud. On the other hand, Maud decided to keep on a bigger conspiracy with no hesitation. Cause this is the only way to escape from her uncle’s control and compression. Finally, they found out it’s Mrs. Sucksby , Maud’s birthmother, who controlled the biggest conspiracy at all. Unfortunately Mr. Rivers was killed in chaos. Mrs. Sucksby confessed to be the murderer and protected these two girls.
The conspiracy ended with two lives. Sue forgave Maud after knowing the whole truth. At last they all lost maternal love forever, but gained and gave love to each other.
The interesting point is about finger. Sue is a finger-smith stolen by fingers. And Maud had been taught to protect fingers for writing pornography catalogs. Maud would success in stealing Sue’s fortune if Mrs. Sucksby had pushed on the biggest conspiracy smoothly. To a certain degree, both Sue and Maud had once been a finger-smith.
