It’s a redundant biography without focus, rather than a movie. It includes so many details that I don’t know what’s the point. Or perhaps Biography movie is not my type. And it is way too long!
I care story and insights most, but this film is overly worn make up. The music is overused, creating continuous tension by music results in opposite effects: the movie is not well structured, it is loose. The funny thing is, despite with abundant details I couldn’t understand many parts. The dramatic visual effects prevents audiences from understanding the conversation and physical theory. If the purpose is to impress people with fantastic genius and fancy theories, it’s a success though. But on the other hand, people don’t need to watch a movie to learn that physics is obscure.
I’m not impressed by Oppenheimer in this movie. I don’t see clear characters of him. It even doesn’t present transformations of his life stages and minds, for example how he agreed to manage the project, any struggling? Or this is just the fact that he accepted without hesitation? After I read a paper about Oppenheimer, did I realize that this is such a complex and legendary figure. Nolan is fascinated by Oppenheimer’s dramatic life and personality. No wonder Nolan wants to show everything, with 3 hours long. But in this sene, it’s a complete failure, it doesn’t make sense to show a series of snapshots.
In general, the movie is not handled well. Absolutely the material has a great potential. Either tell an exciting story of quantum physics, which is so fascinating, or create a charming, complex figure. It failed to fulfill either.
