3. 1954 hearing on renewal of Oppenheimer's security clearance by the Atomic Energy Commission
4. 1959 Senate hearing on Strauss to become a Secretary of Commerce
70-80%。The world we live in is so damn complicated, especially when politics and national security are taking center stage.
“The greatest scientific gamble in history” (President Truman’s statement): Three years, 4000 scientists, and two billion dollars at Los Alamos (the whole Manhattan Project over 120,000 workers)
~200,000 civilian deaths after the bombing in Japan (1945), potentially saving thousands of lives through ending the war early -- both civilians in the Allied countries and soldiers in both Allies and Axis.
Genius, womanizer, scientist (theoretical physicist), project manager, politician, 像谜一样的人,"the troubled, tortured, and tremendous mind of Oppenheimer"
It is not a master piece, but definitely a good movie. How can it not be when we are watching a film about the brilliant and complicated character of Oppenheimer and “the most important fucking thing to happen in the history of the world” (in the angry words of Lieutenant General Leslie Groves Jr. by Matt Damon) made by arguably the greatest contemporary director?
Oppenheimer later recalled that, while witnessing the explosion, he thought of a verse from the Bhagavad Gita (XI,12): "If the radiance of a thousand suns were to burst at once into the sky,
that would be like the splendor of the mighty one."
Oppenheimer in a 1965 interview: “I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad Gita; Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty and, to impress him, takes on his multi-armed form and says, "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." I suppose we all thought that, one way or another.”
As my son put it so poignantly, “it is all about consequences; consequence of injecting poison into an apple, consequence of having an affair (and how it affected witnessing in the hearing decades later), consequences of building the bomb, dropping the bomb … …”
I thought to myself, “right, it is all about consequences. But the world is too damn complicated as it also depends on whose consequences you are considering.”
The next day after watching the movie, upon reading Nolan’s remarks, “The whole film is about consequences – the delayed onset of consequences that people often forget. You are not necessarily confronted with the strongest or worst elements of your action in the moment.” (https://www.vulture.com/article/oppenheimer-christopher-nolan-cillian-murphy-behind-the-scenes.html)
I think Nolan has achieved his purpose as someone with a sharp mind understood his primary intention in producing this film.

"I do not see this movie as focusing on his moral dillema but more as an ego struggle: How he sees himself, how others see him, how the world sees him and how he thinks or wants the world to see him."
