"From a traditional character development, I think from a clinical perspective one of the reasons it resonates so much is that in clinical practice we see a lot of people who enter into these same patterns, they have a clear way to kind of set their life on the straight and narrow and they choose to deviate from society’s norms. Every time they do that, it feels like a failure, from the counselors point of view, like we as counselors aren’t doing a good job in convincing people what path to follow. But just really reminds us that people have to make their own decisions. For a client, it’s really about autonomy, counselors are suppose to promote a client’s autonomy, and sometimes clients make decisions that puzzle individuals who are counseling them. They don’t seem to be in the best interest no matter how we define 'best interest'. This doesn’t mean the counselors can’t work to help clients kind of see what might be a good idea, and what might not be to appreciate the consequences of behavior but it does mean that counselors can’t force people to do anything. Clients come to counseling and we hope the get something useful from that but ultimately clients have to make their own decisions. So when we look at something like Jimmy McGill and we see him make these mistakes repeatedly, it’s important to recognize that those are the choices that he is making. People are making decisions and in the end they have to accept the consequences of those decisions. I think the real tragedy of Jimmy, is he can’t really see how others see him. He’s stuck in that cycle. It’s not so much what he does that’s bad, it’s that he can’t break himself out of the pattern. "
