Last year, the “Oscar Best Film “award was given to Everything Everywhere All at Once. Despite the politic issues these years, the film is highly praised for its imagination and the focus on Asian families. Behind the film, A24 is obviously a important character who pushed the film to success. Lots of the films these years, you will always see a logo with the mark of A24.Unlike Disney or Warner Bros who enjoy to invest films with larger economic benefits, A24 is able to find films with highly potential .A24 focuses on two topics: artistic films with high quality such as Moonlight and films likes Everything Everywhere All at Once which have strong elements like s-fi, comedy and action. Being an independent filmmaking industry, it invests film with low profile but most of the films won success and brought them huge profits. Why the taste of A24 on films is so unique? It doesn’t follow the latest trend in the film industry nor does it hire famous actors and directors. It focuses on films which tell the story about people who are on the edge of the society and are easily ignored such as LGBT (Whale)blacks (Moonlight)and Asians (Past lives ). Its perspective is unique and strange: A Chinese travels into the multiverse or a homosexual who is too fat to move (Whale) But no matter how strange the topics are, they all lead to a higher inner core while no other movies do. Behind the humorous time travel story. Everything Everywhere All at Once tries to discuss the generation gap between the relationship of the Asian family which roots deeply in their traditional culture. It also shows the realistic and ordinary lives of the immigrants struggling through the American society . The ending is touching: family always unites together .Unlike the grand narrative in Everything Everywhere All at Once , Aftersun focuses on something small: a grown-up woman tries to remember a trip with her passed father when she was still young. The director used a personal perspective to describe the colorful trip: moving shots by the girl’s low pixel camera and fixed lens to show the beautiful scenery. But what made the film so special is that the father was depressed and hid his feelings .On the other hand, the girl explored the world of grown-ups on her own and learnt to grow up step by step .The secrets kept by the two finally let their relationship went to untrusted and misjudged .But both father and daughter learnt to understand each other by the end of trip .However, the girl never found out her father’s depression until she looks back through the past when she grows up .The last long shot is nearly perfect :the girl’s memory of the past on her old camera moves to the woman’s regretful face in the present and then moves to her father’s depressed looks with he shutting the door and disappeared .Without one word, the heartbreaking story deeply touches the audience.With the high qualities of the films, A24 takes an important part in the international film awards. Last year, as I mentioned above, Everything Everywhere All at Once won the best film, best actress and best director and so on. Aftersun was highly praised in the Cannes last year and was chosen to be the best film of the year by many media and press in France. This year A24 made its way to the Cannes again by its new film The Zone of Interest. Not to mention that Moonlight won the Oscar best film in 2016 and Whale won the best actor last year . A24 seems to dominate the award season.Since the SAG-AFTRA is still on strike and the negotiation between the filmmaking company and the WGA (the Writer Union) isn’t over in Hollywood .the film industry is still in a low mood .and the future seems uncertain.However,A24 set an example of producing independent and excellent films. Maybe it’s time for the traditional film studios to lower their ambitions and start thinking what films do the people really want.
