机器战警:What a couple of critics won't see...

RoboCop's unexpected & very interesting aspect turns out to be the genre of the movie. Action movie ? Yes, undoubtedly, but this is what everyone guesses just by hearing the name of the movie. Sci-Fi ? Clearly some elements, but overall not really. Detective ? Plenty of cops & some twists, but nah. What genre then ?

Comedy.

Yes, this show is super funny. Before starting to watch it, we've been making fun of it. During the flick, we laughed our ass off. And now that the movie is over, the jokes & references about the movie won't get rusted so far.

Everything is funny about the movie, and the fact that the storyline is plain and totally predictable, it enables the viewer to concentrate about the other aspects : stop motion of the ED-209, the visual effects and gore of the show (death by acid of the villain towards the end) the villains' jokes and behaviour (especially the black guy), the overplayed reactions of the secondary characters when they face threat (the executives in the meeting room, the bookworm doing his geometry, the office pussies in toilet scene), the advertisements and stupid shows ("I'd pay a dollar for that), the super-capitalist greed of the universe etc... Heck, even the structure of the show is funny, as well as the dialogue lines who are supposed to be cool.

The movie could have quite easily took the wrong path by including romance (between Murphy / Robocop and his female partner ; or even with his ex-wife), drama (since some important characters died), or just emphasized the happy ending by showing how life got back to normal and how all the secondary characters are now smiling and living in a safe world. No fuck that !
RoboCop just walks in the company ruling the police at the end, shoots the mothafucker when he could have arrested him, and shows a smile (a troll ?) to the camera before the credits. No cheeziness whatsoever.
The director knew that in the beginning he needed some buildup and introduction for the setting - although it was a bit too serious, and alike knew that the ending didn't need 10 minutes of clicheys.

Respect for that !

Robocop is probably better than each of the new Batman series (2000's & after) and probably better than a couple of the old ones as well.
