Returning from South Africa the midwives find the grim Sister Ursula has taken over as superior from Sister Julienne and is intent on imposing a frugal regime and an unwelcome new system. The nurses are also concerned for put-upon mother-to-be Trudy Watts, whose ex-con husband Lester is bullying her and their five-year old son Mickey. Having escaped from him to give birth at the convent Trudy decides to stand up for herself but needs Phyllis's help to triumph.
