When Francis's son Geoffrey Charles shows some spirit against his hated step-father Warleggan brings in Elizabeth's impoverished cousin Morwenna as the boy's governess. When Elizabeth finally gives birth to a son, Valentine, Aunt Agatha curses him for being born under a black moon. This propels Ross into a bargain with George Warleggan.
