曼纽娜（朱迪·加兰 Judy Garland 饰）即将和镇长佩德罗（沃尔特·斯勒扎克 Walter Slezak 饰）携手步入婚姻的殿堂，可实际上，曼纽娜并不爱佩德罗。当地流传着关于海盗的传说，曼纽娜对海盗的生活充满了好奇和希冀，觉得那一定充满了无数的乐趣。 吟游诗人萨拉芬（吉恩·凯利 Gene Kelly 饰）爱慕着曼纽娜的美貌，同时也知道曼纽娜对于海盗的好奇，于是，他谎称自己就是传说中的海盗。果不其然，曼纽娜立刻就对萨拉芬产生了浓厚的兴趣。萨拉芬的所作所为激怒了佩德罗，在镇民们的帮助下，曼纽娜躲了起来。哪知道这场闹剧却意外的揭开了佩德罗隐藏了多年的秘密。
