《山中常盤》是江戶年代浮世繪開拓者岩佐又兵衛創作的繪卷，描繪歷史人物源義經為母親常盤復仇之事，共十二卷，長一百五十米，是為日本繪畫史的傑作。羽田澄子以保存繪卷原貌為重，鏡頭隨卷軸推展，既流動不拘，又躑躅徘徊，再輔以「淨琉璃」（三味線伴奏的說唱）說解，古老的日本傳奇如泣如訴，波瀾變化。岩佐又兵衛畫風濃艷，社會景象固然活靈活現，常盤遇害及源義經手刃眾山賊，細節之血腥駭人促成戲劇的高峯。羽田拍攝真實的歷史遺跡和人物表演，格調清奇，得以平衡奇矯恣肆的圖畫。這種藝術的中和啟發歷史實感和想像，而數百年前本為通俗娛樂的繪卷，經羽田澄子詮釋，演化出典雅而悲慨的氣韻。
